An open letter to our AFT family:

I know that you, like me, are horrified by the desperate humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Nearly every person in Gaza needs urgent humanitarian assistance. Two million Palestinians have been displaced, and the entire population is facing dire food insecurity. According to UNICEF, 80 percent of those who have died from malnutrition during this war were children.

This is an immediate crisis that requires our intervention. Please join with me and other AFT members in donating today to the AFT Disaster Relief Fund for Gaza Humanitarian Aid.

Your contribution will go immediately to relief work on the ground by the AFT partner organization American Near East Refugee Aid (known as Anera), a nonprofit charity with decades of experience working in the area. One hundred percent of your donation will go to Anera, because the AFT covers any fees for collecting funds.

Many AFT members are deeply connected to people in Israel and Palestine. Countless others, including the students we teach, are horrified by the catastrophic humanitarian tragedy that has escalated over the past two years.

We continue to call for a ceasefire, a negotiated settlement to the war, immediate massive humanitarian assistance and, of course, the release of all hostages.

The AFT remains steadfast in our support for two states for two peoples, with self-determination for Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and with freedom.

Throughout this war, AFT locals and members have supported Anera in its humanitarian work, to offer lifesaving food and medical assistance, treat psychological trauma and provide emergency shelter. Anera has earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating of four stars. If you would like to donate more than $1,000, you may contact sectreas@aft.org so that we can collect your donation without any fees at all.

The funds you donate will go directly to the distribution of food, water, medical assistance and tents on the ground in Gaza.

None of us can look at the starvation and misery that innocent civilians are enduring in Gaza without anguish. If you can help, I hope you will consider making a donation to support immediate humanitarian aid to alleviate this crisis.
