In today’s classrooms, stress, mental health concerns and burnout are at an all-time high for educators and students alike. This is even more apparent for autistic and neurodiverse students: Nearly 39.6 percent of autistic children experience an anxiety disorder. With the ever evolving education landscape, prioritizing happiness and well-being has never been more important.

That’s why March 20—the United Nations-led International Day of Happiness—is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and promote joy in your classroom. At Proof Positive, we believe that happiness isn’t just a feeling—it’s a skill that can be learned and practiced, like reading, math and communication. And like the United Nations, we believe happiness is a universal right that should be accessible to everyone. This is especially true for special education students, who benefit from a tailored curriculum.

Why Teach About Happiness?

While academics are a key part of school, so is emotional well-being. Research shows that increasing our interactions with positive emotions helps build resilience by creating an upward spiral of positivity—broadening the mind, enhancing problem-solving, and lowering stress in challenging moments. By integrating simple, evidence-informed activities into your day, you can help students develop emotional literacy, build problem-solving skills and stronger relationships, and create a more positive classroom environment.

The International Day of Happiness Activity Bundle

To make it easy for you to bring happiness into the classroom, we’ve created a free downloadable activity bundle with engaging, inclusive activities designed for all learners. Download the bundle to teach happiness in your classroom–on March 20 and beyond.

In this special bundle, students will:

  • Learn about the International Day of Happiness and why happiness matters;
  • Explore happiness as a skill that can be developed through daily practices;
  • Identify the 10 big positive emotions that contribute to happiness;
  • Participate in a hands-on activity to recognize what brings them joy; and
  • Brainstorm ways to incorporate happiness habits into their routines.

Here’s what’s included in the bundle:

  1. International Day of Happiness Google Slides—a brief introduction to the International Day of Happiness, why happiness matters, and how happiness is a skill that can be learned and practiced.
  2. "What Kind of Happy Are You?" Poster Activity—a classroom display that helps students recognize, name and share different types of happiness: awe, inspiration, pride, interest, serenity, love, gratitude, hope, joy, and amusement.
  3. Positive Emotions Flashcards—a fun and accessible way to introduce students to the variety of emotions that contribute to happiness.
  4. Positive Emotions File Folder Activities—hands-on activities for independent work systems, morning routines, and social and emotional learning.

Each activity includes modifications to support diverse learning needs, such as visual supports, alternative participation methods, and more. As always, you know your students best; we encourage you to modify resources to fit the individualized needs and preferences of your students.

By incorporating these activities, you’re not just celebrating one day—you’re helping students build lifelong skills that foster happiness and resilience. Because everyone deserves happiness.

Happy International Day of Happiness!
