What is it? The lesson plan contains varied activies in and out of the classroom and using ICT. The activities progress nicely form the basic idea of a bearing being measured clockwise from North, to links with parallel lines and practical applications using airport runways. The ideas can easily be adapted to add support and challenge. How it could be used. The beauty of this lesson is that it is active and reflective. Step 1 Find a sunny day. Step 2 Steel a set of compasses from D of E. Step 3 Go outside and get students to use the compasses. The lesson plan and powerpoints gives some good suggestions. Be creative and have fun with it. Outcomes: Students can see that bearings are measured clockwise from North. They can see the difference between angles and bearings. They may make links between parallel lines and bearings.
