Adaptable lessons on - The Slave Trade for 6th - 8th Grade Students covering different topics. This lesson gets students to create a visual represenation / piece of art about the slave trade.
The images used as references are all similar. This does not provide much variety for the students. All the images show the slaves being beaten and herded along; only one shows the crowded boats. There are no images of slaves being sold, families being torn apart or more of the conditions on the ships during the trading. I don't know if this is because there is a lack of art covering those aspects, or if the lesson just chose not to include them.
The lesson has the students creating art showing the horrors of the slave trade...well the students are looking at images that already do that. Might they just draw what they are looking at without actually knowing what is going on/ comprehend the brutality? Perhaps having the students analyze the art, then create a story to go along with the art, using it to provide details in their story. Or if you really want the students to create an image, you can first create the story, have them read it and then they can create their own image. Both of the altered suggestions to the lesson plan are better suited to assess student learning.
