Interesting background documents to be used in discussing 9/11/01. As an additional resource, teachers may want to read my children's book "Sirius, The Hero Dog of 9/11" to their classes. This book has been an integral part of the state-wide 9/11 Education curriculum (grades 4 through 9) of the New Jersey Department of Education since 2009. The complete 32-page book, including 25 child-friendly photographs, appears under my name, Hank Fellows, on my "Share My Lesson" page on this website. A song about "Sirius," as well as three lesson plans also appear on my webpage.

Great resources! The lesson does a good job of showing the students the viewpoints that people on both sides of the conflict have. It also does a great job of showing mob mentality and how people jump to conclusions when dealing with heavy events. It is worth noting that there is some profanity in a quote in the Anti-Muslim actions after 911. You may want to be aware of that depending on how your school feels about profanity used in an educational setting.

The profanity is what real

The profanity is what real people said to Muslims (or people they thought were Muslims) after 9/11. It's simple a primary source document. I always feel it is important to show students truth, even if that truth is disgusting or difficult to understand. It's the same way we teach them about Emmett Till or Auschwitz or rape - we need to prepare students for the reality of this world and give them tools to approach and deal with it.
