About This Lesson

Go to www.21stCenturyLessons.org for unit sequencing; Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to describe the formula for the area of any circle in the world. Students will engage in a hands-on activity that allows for them to discover that it takes a little more than 3 "radius squares" to find the area of a circle. The lesson utilizes a short video to solidify the relationship while maintaining a hands-on experience. The lesson begins with a warm-up which you can build on as the class progresses. Aligned with CCSS: 6.G.1 , 6.G.4 , 7.G.4

Standards

Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.
