About This Lesson

This activity has students try to fix the problems in China after the death of Mao Zedong. They must come up with solutions to these problems: damage caused by the Cultural Revolution, overpopulation, lack of foreign investment, bad foreign relations, the emerging democracy movement (the "Beijing Spring"). After students invent solutions to these 5 problems, they will be given the Four Modernizations handout and they should then explain if their own solutions were better or worse than what Deng Xiaoping came up with.

Great idea, shortened the readings

This was definitely a more engaging way to teach students about Deng's Four Modernizations than what I'd used in past years! However, I also wanted to give students some board notes, and was worried about both the timing and about students who struggle with reading, so I edited and shortened the readings.

I never leave reviews!

This lesson is easily adaptable and straight forward. It fits seamlessly into my unit and the kids responded very well! I'm so happy that some quality lessons are still free! Thank you!
