About This Lesson

Socrates, the great philosopher and scholar, regularly responded to his students questions with more questions instead of answers. He realized that this process encourages divergent (different and unlimited) thinking rather than convergent (one single, correct answer) thinking. With Socratic Seminar, you are given opportunities to examine a common piece of text, whether it is in the form of a novel, short story, poem, art print, or piece of music. After close-reading the text thought provoking questions are posed.
