About This Lesson

This NASA video segment shows students performing a hands-on activity to find the optimum ratio of baking soda to a controlled amount of vinegar to power a baking soda and vinegar, or BSV, rocket. Middle school students from Huntsville, Ala., assemble their BSV rockets, launch their rockets and measure the distances that their cargo traveled. Students also graph their results and analyze them as a class to determine the amount of baking soda and vinegar to provide the best performance.
