About This Lesson

This packet explains Latin American Independence Movements without going too deep into any one nation or region's history. It is a general overview of the mercantilist problems between Spain and its colonies (with diagrams and a primary source), an overview of the social class system in Spanish colonies, documents explaining how Napoleon, Haiti, and Simon Bolivar influenced Latin American independence (all secondary sources). It finishes with an excerpt that explores what happened post-independence to the Latin American nations. All sources are followed with questions for students.
