About This Lesson

Elephants play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy environment on the island of Sumatra. In this lesson, students learn how elephants engineer the ecosystem to benefit humans and nature; and they explore Sumatra using Google Earth to investigate the ranges of key species, determine areas of human impact, and propose conservation solutions. Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core, this lesson is part of curriculum related to the PBS series Earth A New Wild and was developed in collaboration with PBS LearningMedia.
