About This Lesson

This Role Play has students in groups of four where each person is Italy, France, Great Britain, or the Soviet Union. For each German aggression (rearmament, remilitarizing the Rhineland, Anschluss, annexing Sudetenland, and annexing Czechoslovakia) the nations must take a position about whether they will invade or not, and if three of them agree, they go to war against Hitler. But given their different situations at each stage of Nazi agression, they probably won't. It illustrates how appeasement actually happened. It ends by explaining the Nazi-Soviet Pact and how the invasion of Poland started WWII. Includes many maps and a political cartoon at the end!

I used this lesson last year.

I used this lesson last year. The students got into the lesson and loved trying to get other countries to side with them.

Adam,

Adam,

Awesome lesson. Do you have any recommendations on how to proceed in the lesson if the four groups all decide to immediately invade Germany?

Thanks in advance,
Lucas

Great!

I'm impressed with the quality of this lesson, just sitting there for free. This is a solid activity for a whole class period and allows for lots of interaction and critical thinking on how and why appeasement happened. Students might need a little more info along the way, but for the most part, this lesson is ready-made out of the box. I was thankful for it.
