Join Stony Brook WTC Wellness Program and Share My Lesson for a webinar on how to teach 9/11.

9/11 is an emotionally and politically charged event that for many educators simply hits too close to home. However, as years pass, it becomes evident just how important it is that we embark down this road with our students. High school students today have no direct memories of 9/11, and yet their world has been shaped by its deep impacts on our society. They are coming of age during a tumultuous time. Wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria. ISIS. Domestic terrorism. Growing tensions between various social groups. In this world of instant information and news, how do students determine fact from opinion? How does one think critically about the stories one is hearing or reading? Democracy, in any form requires the ability of its people to objectively filter information in order to survive. Our students need a safe place to explore what happened on 9/11 and discuss its lingering impact on our communities, society, politics and culture. This webinar will introduce the Stony Brook WTC Wellness Program 9/11 curriculum that is rooted in the stories of the responders and will discuss methods to help students develop a deeper understanding of 9/11’s cultural impact. These activities help students recognize the need to use a variety of sources when seeking information, especially about significant events or political issues.

Speakers

Julie A. Broihier, M.A., is the Outreach and Education, Retention, and Quality Data Manager for the Stony Brook WTC Wellness Program at Stony Brook Medicine. She has worked with the Program since late 2007. During this time, she assisted the Director, Dr. Benjamin J. Luft, in establishing the “Remembering 9/11” oral history program. As a lead interviewer for this project, Ms. Broihier has developed an intimate knowledge of the deep impact on the 9/11 responders and their families and the complex repercussions of 9/11 on our culture.

Ms. Broihier and her team developed a variety of public education projects, including library program, high school programs and a medical school course. She played an integral role in the production of materials for these programs, including video shorts on topics such as the WTC toxic exposures and related health issues, and the film, “9/11: An American Requiem”. She has worked with educators to develop materials tailored to a variety of audiences, and has participated in these programs as a guest presenter and moderator. In 2013, Dr. Luft and the Program was recognized by Long Island Business News as a “Healthcare Hero for Community Outreach” for their public outreach and education initiatives (http://libn.com/health-care-heroes-awardees-2013/).

Ms. Broihier earned her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from St. Norbert College in 1999 and her Masters of Arts and Sciences from Fordham University in 2003. She has worked in research and medicine at SUNY-Stony Brook since 2003.

Available for one-hour of PD credit. A certificate of completion will be available for download at the end of your session that you can submit for your school's or district's approval.

Share My Lesson is now a New York State Education Department-approved provider for Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) requirements and an Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) approved Professional Development provider.
