About This Lesson

In this 90-minute lesson, students will work on SEL skills that include developing self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success.  Students will have the opportunity to reflect and recognize their strengths and their critical thinking abilities.  The lesson begins with the teacher asking students to think metacognitively about their thinking process as a springboard to analyze and compare a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting and an Emily Dickinson poem.  Graphic organizers are used to assist students with their analysis and comparison in addition to guiding their small group discussion.  This lesson is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for the 11-12th grade band.
