About This Lesson

Students will watch a video to learn about echolocation and how it can be used by humans. The video features a young blind boy who uses echolocation. The class brainstorms the pros and cons of human use of echolocation.

Blindfolded and in pairs, students locate their partners using shakers. The task is then repeated a second time with multiple pairs locating their partners at the same time. This activity illustrates the impact of background noise on echolocation.

Students write a reflection on the challenges and benefits of echolocation for humans. They consider how they can make their school more accessible for people with vision and hearing challenges.
