Immigration is one of the essential civic issues of our time. The increasing diversity of communities across the U.S., coupled with demands for racial justice, has helped to drive issues of equity to the forefront of our civic life. In this election season, immigration, past and present, is used as a wedge to divide Americans. Beyond the headlines, it is increasingly uncommon to find a city or town where immigrants do not play a role. However, they are often marginalized due to government policies and programs, political demonization, and intensifying prejudice in schools, communities and media. Schools and other educational institutions are in the crucible.

We are tasked with preparing all young people to build a shared civic future with people whose identities, experiences and worldviews are often quite different from their own. In this webinar, led by Adam Strom of Re-Imagining Migration, we will introduce tools, resources and lesson activities to prepare students to understand migration and develop an informed perspective this election season. Activities will model ways to promote civic preparedness, including perspective-taking, inquiry skills, the ability to communicate across differences, recognize inequities, and the ability and inclination to take civic action.
