About This Lesson

The Mystery of Rare Diseases is a lesson plan created by Sarah Kesty of Castle Park Middle School.  It was selected as a Rare Lessons winner.  Rare Lessons is a Rare Disease Lesson Plan contest hosted by Sarepta Therapeutics.  The program is intended to promote the development and implementation of rare disease education in the K-12 classroom.

Objective:

Through guided practice, middle school students learn the concepts behind rare disease manifestations and diagnosis. They infer that rare diseases can be difficult to diagnose and are important to research. Following discussions, students connect that in real-life, millions of people are impacted by rare disease, making inclusive practices for individuals with rare diseases significant.
