Our research-backed Codebook for Global Student Learning Outcomes shows how, and this introductory video offers step-by-step instructions for adapting the Codebook to your own K-12 classroom, curriculum, and global learning priorities.
In this lesson, we will guide you through an instructional planning process to select a global learning outcome and indicator and break it down into observable, teachable actions. Then you will learn how to assess student progress by analyzing student work.
In addition, you will hear from educators who have helped pioneer the Codebook in their classrooms around the world, advancing their students' global citizenship, global competency, and civic engagement.
Background
The Global Cities Codebook for Global Student Learning Outcomes gives teachers a way to define, teach, and measure global learning in any K-12 program or classroom. It draws on original data from the pioneering Global Scholars international virtual exchange program. The Global Cities framework is grounded in four global student learning outcomes:
- appreciation for diversity
- cultural understanding
- global knowledge
- global engagement
We have identified 55 concrete, observable, and teachable indicators that name the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors students may demonstrate as they progress toward the four learning outcomes.
Global Cities, Inc., a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies, conducted this research with Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Project Zero. The Codebook is co-published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
