Stefan Cohen began teaching in the Rochester (NY) City School District in 1989. From 1994 to 2014 his classroom was at Rochester's School of the Arts where he taught Social Studies VII and VIII, U.S. History Regents, and Advanced Placement U.S. History. He earned National Board Certification in 2007 and renewed in 2017. Stefan served for many years as a Rochester Teachers Association (RTA) Building Representative. From 2009-2013, he worked with teachers across the district as a Lead Teacher for Social Studies under the federal Teaching American History grant and has presented at local, state, and national conferences on many social studies topics, including “Why Every American High School Student Should Read the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.” Since 2014, he has been released from the classroom as Director of the Career in Teaching program, Rochester’s Peer Assistance and Review program run collaboratively by the district and the teachers union. He oversees 180 Lead Teacher Mentors in this nationally-recognized Mentoring and Professional Support program.
