About This Webinar

My mission as an elementary special education teacher and a published children’s author is to motivate, engage, and empower ALL learners to realize that no matter what their challenges, they are destined to do great things. One of those ways is through the Themed Project-Based Learning Approach (TPBLA) I created in 2015. This unique technique enhances student motivation and engagement enhancing students desire and ability to progress in their reading individualized IEP/MTSS goals in a meaningful way. This presentation will provide educators with an overview into the theme “Welcome Aboard the Yellow Submarine - Oceanography” and a deep dive into sea turtles. Throughout this theme, students participated in various projects that involve their ability to collaborate, coordinate, and connect within their individualized IEP/MTSS goal groups, the resource room community, their general education classrooms, school staff, students, and families, the Northville Public Schools community, and with the PBL partner “The Georgia Sea Turtle Center” (GSTC). As these projects occur in deliberate conjunction with student IEP/MTSS goals, students progress in their goals, and increase their ability to delve deeply, think critically, and effectively communicate orally and written about a topic.Additionally, the presentation will include:

  • Evolution of TPBLA
  • Benefits of TPBLA
  • Introduction to Project Based Learning with handout of available resources
  • Overview of themed Project Based Learning activities
  • Use of quality nonfiction children’s literature
  • The cultivation of connections with real experts out in the world from whom students can learn and with whom they can share their learning
  • Development of a resource room community for all IEP/MTSS levels at all grade levels
