Sept. 11 is a federally recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance - one of only two on the U.S. calendar, along with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For today’s students, 9/11 is history—something they may not remember or weren’t yet born to witness. Teachers have the unique opportunity to help a new generation understand the significance of the day, and to redefine it as a day of doing good. By guiding students toward acts of kindness, service and unity, we help ensure that the legacy of 9/11 is one of hope and compassion. To celebrate and support this important work, 9/11 Day has launched a special Teacher Sweepstakes, with prizes that are truly meaningful. Two grand-prize winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for themselves and a guest to New York City, including a private tour of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Additional prizes include iPads and classroom technology tools to further support teaching and learning.

All educators can access 9/11 Day’s full library of free teaching resources—no entry required. At 911day.org/teachers, you’ll find:

  • Complete lesson plans and stand-alone activities to fit any schedule, from a single class period to a full unit.
  • Materials tailored for preK-12, aligned with social emotional learning, C3 (College, Career, and Civic Life Framework), and Common Core standards.
  • A School Engagement Toolkit with ready-to-use tools and templates to involve your entire school.
  • A Teacher’s Guide with an overview of 9/11 Day and guidance for introducing this important topic with sensitivity and care.

Whether you have five minutes or a week, these resources make it easy to guide students in performing their own good deeds and connecting their actions to a national movement of service.

Enter the sweepstakes today—and explore all resources at 911day.org/teachers-sweepstakes.

Together, let’s honor the past by inspiring the next generation to build a kinder, more compassionate future.
