School Reopening Community: Learning Beyond COVID-19

Virtual and F2F is hard.

I’m tired all the time from rebuilding lessons we are to share from my fellow teachers who do jot teach virtually. They have our lessons. I do not know how to help them understand that a page full of links is not a virtual lesson. Then helping students try to complete lessons that they are not completing is so hard. I’m on the phone more than I am teaching. Would love some help and guidance.

I use OneNote for each student to provide them with all the work they must complete. I also use flipgrid which I find the students can communicate their messages, and receive replies from others. It becomes a thread of wonderful conversations. I base these discussions on what we are learning.

What kind of online learning materials are teachers for elementary school students using? I have parents that are working and are concerned this process will be the same time and energy requirement as Home Schooling. Any thoughts or advice on how to ease that concern? Any resources you know of that help with this?

Distance learning for our school is difficult, Rural area on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana.

No more than 30% of families have internet. We do weekly packets but our district covers over 440,000 acers. Covid has hit hard 30 deaths in last month.

Our first quarter (in a public middle school with an International Baccalaureate daily required 8 content areas schedule) was Day 1/Day2 and completely virtual; now we are virtual and in-person with an abbreviated schedule and a Day 1/Day2 model.

The in-person is from 8:15 AM to 12:15 PM; then there are shortened classes for students who remained virtual. I think it feels great to have students back in person, but I am dissatisfied with the overall effectiveness of the model. According to district admin., the current model is likely to change again at the end of second quarter.

I am having such a hard time managing 16 in person 1st graders and 4 online.

We are hybrid and virtual.

We have 2 groups of hybrid one coming M/T, all home Wednesday’s and the other group R/F. I teach 9 small groups a day with one being the hybrid group and alternate every 2 weeks with my social studies partner to teach 7th or 8th. I. Science. I can’t even tell left from right most days ?

This is our model as well. And yesterday afternoon we found out we are going distance learning on Monday for at least two weeks. I planned for this from August so I and my students are ready and the only concern I have to deal with is supporting students and their families as they deal with the short notice.
