About This Lesson

To teach students  where to place the decimal point for adding and subtracting decimals, have them place Frosty the Snowman's 3 buttons on the paper. Draw a line under the 2nd button. The 3rd button is for the answer. They write the problem around Frosty's buttons and then add  or subtract the numbers. Remind them of the place values of the numbers to the left and to the right of Frosty's button.

This teaches the process only

This teaches the process only not the deep understanding of place value of decimals for addition and subtraction.

I thought that it was

I thought that it was understood to be a "crutch" and not a replacement for teaching place value. Your helpful review is why I added that explanation to the process.
