About This Lesson

In this 90-minute lesson students will read an excerpt from Claude M. Steele's Whistling Vivaldi how stereotypes affect us and what can we do in order to develop self- and social awareness when they are in situations where stereotypes may be present.  A teacher summary and student reading guide are included to assist students' comprehension of this text. In the lesson, students are presented with two psychological terms – identity contingencies and stereotype threats, and asked to reflect and discuss them in a chalk talk.  This learning strategy focuses on silent writing to share responses.  In this way, all student perspectives may be honored and everyone participates in the "conversation."  At the end of the lesson, students will self-reflect and assess their performance in the lesson.  This lesson is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for the 11th-12th grade band.
