About This Lesson

In this 90 minute lesson, students will develop SEL skills like social-awareness, interpersonal skill and maintaining positive relationships and caring communities. Students will work cooperatively to create a political cartoon to provide their perspective on an issue currently in the news. In this lesson, students will review historical political cartoons from the Reconstruction Era through a Gallery Walk and small group and whole class discussions on the meaning and impact of political cartoons. Students will look at the Reconstruction Era, Slavery, Civil War, and the amendments that followed. This lesson includes, a PowerPoint, all necessary handouts, rubrics, answer keys, and a teacher’s guide to aid with class discussions. This lesson is aligned to the Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies and the Ohio State Standards for American Government.
