About This Lesson

On September 11, 2001, hundreds of uniformed first responders including firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical technicians came to the World Trade Center to help people. Use this lesson plan to explore the question: What is a hero and how can people show gratitude to those who act heroically in their own communities?

In this lesson, students will:

  • Understand the role of a first responder in an emergency.
  • Understand that 9/11 is an important historical event that affected people in the United States and around the world.
  • Explore the concepts of heroism, gratitude, and sympathy.

Lesson plans include interactive images, videos, and links, that are best viewed directly from our website using the link in the resources tab.
