About This Lesson

This unit introduces basic concepts of existentialism (being and belonging) through reading and analyzing literature. The readings include "St. Lucy's School for Girls Raised by Wolves," "The Metamorphosis,""Marigolds," "The Necklace," and a choice of songs. The worksheets allow for either summary or analysis. Further, the lesson plans are designed as guides for teachers, but are also presentations for students.

recognize and understand the significance of a wide range of literary elements and techniques, (including figurative language, imagery, allegory, irony, blank verse, symbolism, stream-of-consciousness) and use those elements to interpret the work

Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. In literary texts, analyze how complex and/or dynamic characters develop, interact with other characters, advance the plot, or develop a theme. In informational texts, analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or argument, including the sequence, the introduction and development of ideas, and the connections that exist.
