About This Lesson

Hank Fellows, a New York City songwriter, wrote three 9/11 songs following the attacks on the World Trade Center. These songs have been performed hundreds of times across America. In 2006, Hank received a Citation from the New York City Council for his "continued generosity and devotion to the remembrance of September 11th" (see attachment). Since 2009, these songs (and attached lesson plan) also have been part of New Jersey's state-wide 9-11 Education curriculum. Free sheet music and instrumental tracks are available on Hank's "Share My Lesson" page under each song's title.

I used this lesson with my gifted/talented students (4th grade) today. I played the first song and they immediately broke out into song!! Hearing them sing, and talk about the themes of the song, was very touching.

Hi Stephanie, I'm so glad that my 9/11 songs had such a positive effect on your students. Since all of today's elementary school students were born long after 9/11, I find that conveying the facts and themes of 9/11 through songs is a gentle and effective way to educate them about this tragic moment in American history. Please also consider using my children's book "Sirius, The Hero Dog of 9/11" (available on my "Share My Lesson" page), for another very effective way to educate children about the tragedy, courage, and triumph of the American Spirit that took place on and after September 11, 2001.
