About This Lesson
As many fled the burning towers, thousands rushed in to save the injured. Thousands more ordinary men and women returned to Ground Zero, and for weeks and months, they worked to recover bodies and personal artifacts, to clean-up the fallen buildings, and to help our country rise from this tragedy.
The WTC Wellness Program is offering a unique opportunity for high school students to interact directly with 9/11 responders and listen to their profound stories. Students will learn the importance of the oral history method and first-person narratives in understanding significant historical events. They will explore themes including heroism, duty, sacrifice, community, and they will learn about the consequences that continue to affect 9/11 responders, their families, the community and our society.

The Program’s education mission is to ensure that the first-hand accounts from 9/11 responders are preserved and curated for future generations and thus, the Program offers an array of teaching tools to educators across the country. These teaching tools, which can be accessed for free either pre- or post- broadcast stimulate a richer discussion of 9/11 and its impact on the men and women who responded to the WTC disaster. These tools meet NYS and Common Core Standards, are designed for easy implementation in the classroom, and include a documentary film and texts from interviews with 9/11 responders.
