About This Lesson

This article explains South African geography, colonization by the Dutch and British, the Boer Wars, reasons for Apartheid, Apartheid laws, the impacts of Apartheid on black South Africans, the African National Congress (ANC) and leaders like Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Steve Biko, et. al., the Sharpeville Massacre, Soweto Uprising, and the end of Apartheid. There are primary and secondary sources embedded within, prompts for students to watch videos in youtube, and the task is for students to annotate how geography and humans rights relate to what they read.
