About This Lesson

This resource on The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison provides a pre and post-reading activity that engages students in exploring the various primary and secondary themes in the novel. Students are prompted to contemplate the meaning of beauty and compare society's ideals of beauty to their own. Through writing prompts over Dick and Jane, students are then introduced to the idea that themes can become more complex as the age of the intended reader changes. Finally, students are instructed to read three quotes and choose one to use as an essay prompt.
