About This Lesson

This beautifully illustrated, expressive book celebrates the immigrant experience. It is about valuing family, fostering creativity, learning a new language and the power of public libraries. Children will find much to analyze and discuss in the mixed media illustrations, particularly the repeated symbolism of the butterfly. Spanish words are interspersed throughout, providing a playful approach to language and encouraging inclusivity.

About the Community Across Cultures book guides

Whether you are leading a story time for a group of all immigrant children, all U.S.-born children or somewhere in between, The ILC Community Across Cultures (CAC) Book Guides are for you. A collaboration between pedagogy and content experts, the Guides give you the support you need to feel confident introducing immigration-related themes to children. In addition to general information about the book and author, the Guides offer suggestions for thought-provoking, age-appropriate questions to ask children, gives pronunciation tips, and give the reader a short primer on the topic being discussed.
