About This Lesson

Through discussion, reading, and video, students will learn about climate change and an extreme weather event—2013’s Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. They will examine the strategies of planning ahead for future disasters and “building back better” after a disaster to increase resiliency. Finally, students will consider disaster risk in their own community and create their own plans for addressing these risks using their school as an example. This lesson makes use of the Building Back Better Magazine (gr. 3-5).
