About This Lesson

Part one of the two-part Exploration of North America, Canada introduces students to our northern neighbor’s geography and people. Students learn about Canada’s government, major population centers (including Montreal, Quebec City, and Toronto), and the country’s vast wilderness and natural resources. They are introduced to Canada’s indigenous peoples, as well as to its French heritage and its British heritage, which lie behind the country’s two official languages. Students explore the strong influence of French culture in Quebec. They also consider similarities and differences between Canada and the United States and learn how Canada’s history and relationship with Britain are different from those of the United States.

This unit includes a Student Reader, Timeline Image Cards, and Teacher Guide, providing Guided Reading Supports and the following Additional Activities: Venn diagram comparison of Canada and the United States; map skills exercises; domain vocabulary activity page; a virtual field trip to Canada; and a Unit Assessment.
