About This Lesson

Focus: Unit 4 introduces students to eight new sounds. Through oral language games, chaining exercises, and story demonstrations with the decodable Big Book (Pet Fun), students practice blending these sounds into words. Students also practice previously learned letter-sound correspondences.

Number of Lessons: 15

Lesson Time: 60 minutes each. Each lesson may be divided into shorter segments.

Standards

Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
