About This Lesson

This adaptable lesson for grades 7–12 introduces students to the legacy of Connie Chung, the first Asian American and second woman to co-anchor a major evening news broadcast in the United States. Daughter of Chinese immigrants, Connie Chung was born and Washington, D.C and went on to win three Emmys and a Peabody among several other accolades during her journalism career. Using a video and guided worksheet, students explore themes of representation in media, the role of journalism in society, and the challenges faced by women of color in the newsroom.

Aligned with U.S. history, civics, women's studies, and language arts standards, the lesson includes pre-, during-, and post-viewing questions, along with optional extension activities for deeper engagement. Designed to support classroom discussions on race, gender, and power in American media.
