About This Lesson

CIRCLE (the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, a part of Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University) has created a user-friendly data tool, Youth Voting and Civic Engagement in America, which aggregates more than 40 unique indicators for students, teachers, advocates, civic leaders, journalists, policymakers, and others to explore the relationships between voting and other forms of civic participation, and some of the conditions that shape such engagement, in their community. The accompanying PDF offers pedagogical ideas for teachers to utilize the data tool with their students in a range of settings, including in social studies, art, ELA, math, and journalism courses, and the activity ideas and protocols can be adapated for a range of contexts. Teachers can also independently use the tool to access information about their local environment and rates of youth civic participation, for use in word problems, as discussion prompts, or in other ways to connect course content to students' lived experiences.
