About This Lesson

Students will use Harry Fonseca’s painting Shuffle Off to Buffalo to explore what Fonseca meant by “living in both worlds” and how that applies to students’ own lives. They will look at stereotypes and external and internal factors affecting their concept of “self.”

This is definitely not for middle school students--they are not prepared for existential conversations. However, older students will enjoy the conversation and activity. It will, however, take closer to a week.

This is more appropriate for high school students than middle school, and the artistic assignment is more suited to advanced art students than general ed students.
