About This Lesson

This lesson can be used to end the "Age of Revolutions" unit, but I use it as a refresher before I teach about the South Asian and African Independence Movements. Students look at examples of Haitian, Mexican, United States independence to categorize them as politically and economically dependent or independent. Students act as colonies and mother countries to negotiate a decolonization treaty. Finally, students read about why the U.S. and Latin America had very different experiences after decolonization.
