I like this activity. Please beware that many students are adopted. The use of "adoption" in this setting can be make adopted children and their parents very uneasy. I also would avoid using "cost" and "adoption" in the context.

Love having students research a specific element. Have you thought about having them make a wearable fashion for this project? I had students do something similar and create a T-shirt featuring their element. I had the research outline printed on the shirts. And the best part for me was seeing students CONTINUE to wear them after the project was done! This activity was so well received by my students it became a tradition every year. I have since made the shirts available to any teacher who wants to use them, along with all of my resources - including information on the Atomic Attire Fashion Show which was a total hit! Just check out ScienceWear.net and click on Atomic Attire.
