About This Lesson

Empathy is a lesson plan created by Jessica Keogh of West Chester Area School District. It was selected as a Rare Lessons winner.  Rare Lessons is a Rare Disease Lesson Plan contest hosted by Sarepta Therapeutics.  The program is intended to promote the development and implementation of rare disease education in the K-12 classroom.

One out of five Americans have a type of disability.

Objectives:

  • Explain that you cannot judge a person without being in his or her shoes.
  • Identify and recognize the many different types of disabilities.
  • Emphasize that a person with a disability is just like everyone else.
  • Challenge students to put themselves in someone else’s shoes by completing a challenge activity.
