About This Lesson

Looking for fun and engaging English lessons for your ESL students? The Unifying Power of Sports is the perfect lesson plan to spark conversation in your classroom!

The Unifying Power of Sports (CEFR: B2) aims to introduce vocabulary to discuss sports and provide speaking practice. All the vocabulary introduced in this lesson is related to sports, and how and why they bring people together. Some examples include: unite, conflict, divide, spectator, defeat, belong… When introducing these phrases, remember to refer to the related images to provide context clues.

This lesson includes plenty of reading texts and opportunities for discussion and practice. Encourage students to give longer answers with examples and reasons.

Though you can teach this lesson any time of year, we find it particularly fun to anchor it to an upcoming international or nation-wide competition (e.g. The World Cup, The Olympics), or even prior to a school-wide or personal sporting event (e.g. varsity sports, a marathon.)
