About This Lesson
This handout has students read about Gorbachev's reforms of perestroika and glasnost and how they made the Soviet Union fall. Then they read about Deng Xiaoping's Four Modernizations and the One Child Policy to see how Communist China gained strength and power in the 1980s. While reading, students are instructed to annotate the positive or negative effects caused by these changes.
