About This Lesson

Did you know that you can talk like a firefly? Using just a penlight and a cheat sheet of firefly signals, students will be on their way towards speaking in a genuine firefly dialect (though their accents may need extra work). Students will watch a video about how scientists have cracked the code of firefly communication, try flash codes themselves, and can even play a firefly signal game with flashlights. Topics addressed include stimulus/response behaviors, insect and arthropod behavior, entomology, conservation, coding, mimicry, and camouflage.
