About This Lesson

It's easy to feel like you're stuck in a rut. You wake up, eat breakfast, go to work, come home and sleep. Every day, you do the same thing. It's time to shake things up!

The good news is that it's easier to make changes in your life than you might think. You don't need to make big, sweeping changes, even small changes can help you feel like you're living an entirely different life. The important part is just to start. Here are four ways you can start living a more interesting life today.

Change up Your Style

Do you feel like you wear roughly the same thing every day? Why not fix up your style? You can introduce small accent pieces into your wardrobe that give you a sense of fun, adventure and whimsy. Start wearing a fun hat in your everyday life. Even if you're dressing business casual, why not spruce up your look with some novelty socks? Even just wearing a bold, patterned shirt can be a big change for some people.

The great thing about small accent pieces is that they work well with many outfits. You can reuse one piece with a lot of different outfits from your closet to totally reinvigorate your wardrobe. With just a little effort, you can put a small amount of thought into your wardrobe and get big results.

Get Creative

When was the last time you made something with your hands? A lot of adults lose the creative forms of expression they had as children, but the impulses are still there. You can develop the skills, though, if you put in the time.

Take some time this week to start learning how to knit. Paint a small painting or create a little collage. You can even create a miniature house out of dowels and glue. You don't have to be good right away, but making a small craft will give you a sense of accomplishment and open your mind to more creative opportunities down the road. Being creative can help you keep your mind agile and your hands active.

Hang out With Kids

No one is more creative than a child. Children invent whole worlds in their minds and act out complex, exciting scenarios that some adults could never even think of. While it can be easy to dismiss the ideas of children as juvenile and dull, it's much more exciting to go along with them.

If you have children or have a friend or relative with children, schedule a playdate! Make believe with the kids and enjoy the ability to lose yourself in their fantasy world. Talk to them about how they're doing and what they want in life. You'll walk away feeling refreshed and revitalized, and you may even have a new view of the world.

Take Trips

Nothing shakes up your life quite like a trip to a new place. Going off and traveling not only gives you an important change of scenery, it can show you how other people live their lives and give you ideas on how you can live yours differently. Travel is good for your body and your mind, and you'll walk away with a different perspective than you had before.

If you want to feel really inventive, take an exciting impulse trip. Pick a location out of an atlas at random, pack your bags and head out! Being spontaneous and exciting will help shake you out of your rut and do things you never may have considered before.

After days and days of the same thing each day, many people feel like they're living in a rut. It's important to shake yourself up every once in a while, do something creative or spontaneous and remind yourself why you're alive. Take the time to do something different today, even on a whim, and you'll find your whole worldview changed. Having fun and living an interesting life can make you a better person!
