About This Lesson
This handout briefly explores what Haiti was like pre-revolution (as Saint Domingue) with primary and secondary sources (the Code Noir, what a slave plantation was like, and a table of population growth in Saint Domingue). Then there is a brief biography on Toussaint L'ouverture, a secondary source with quotes form L'ouverture about his nationalism, excerpts from the Constitution of 1801, and an article about Haiti's problems since the revolution. Students have to answer questions after each document looking at how Haiti changed during the revolution, and overall, was it truly revolutionary?
