About This Lesson

In this Grade 1 unit, Helpful Computers, the goal of the instruction is that young students begin using computer devices for various purposes, including game play, communication, and schoolwork.

The key question guiding the unit is: What can computer programs do?

Building on the recognition established in the previous grade, students begin to understand that the operation of devices involves a common series of steps in which users input information, the device performs a process, and then a useful output occurs. Inputs include the use of a mouse, keyboard, touchscreen, game controller, camera, or microphone. Output includes screen visuals (text, still images, video), hard-copy printout, and audio. Accessing desired outputs from computers depends first on successful operation of input devices.
