About This Lesson

When you learn a foreign language, you learn how to break a sentence into its component parts. You figure out how the sentence is composed of different phrases, and you determine which words are nouns and which are verbs and how they interact.

In the same way, when you read a mathematical sentence, you break it into its component parts. An equation is composed of expressions. Expressions, in turn are composed of terms, which themselves are typically composed of variables and coefficients.

In this module, you will learn and practice the following skills:

  • Parse a mathematical expression into its components
  • Understand how components are combined to make an expression with mathematical meaning
