About This Lesson

Japan had two demands at the Paris Peace Conference: the transfer of German occupied territories in East Asia and the inclusion of the Racial Equality Proposal to the Treaty of Versailles. How did the outcome of these two aims influence Japanese foreign policy after World War I?

The  excerpted reading and worksheet found hereas well as attached allows students to analyze how global events of 1919 helped shape Japan's outlook during the interwar years.

The text for the worksheet is taken from historian Seiji Shirane's portion of a May 2019 Carnegie Council/Macaulay Honors College panel entitled "100 Years After Versailles."
