About This Lesson
This is a brief handout I give to students in upper-level grades to prepare them for college-level response papers. It is very straightforward, telling students how to respond to a text by commenting on the author's main idea, their evidence, and then evaluating their argument and use of evidence. I made a strong point that students should avoid personal experience, since there is nothing scientific about their own experience that can show a pattern.
